Friday, August 1,  1 PM Tween & Teen Screens:  Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the BlackPearl (2003). Rated PG-13. Directed by Gore Verbinski Featuring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush,Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly.

 

Charming rouge pirate Jack Sparrow loves his life of adventure on the Caribbean Sea.  All of his pleasure is brought to an end, however, when his nemesis Captain Barbossa steals his ship. When Elizabeth Swann, the daughter of the governor, is captured by Barbossa aboard the Black Pearl Elizabeth’s childhood friend Will Turner joins with Jack to rescue the girl and get his ship back in this rollicking adventure.

 

 

Saturday, August 2   Noon- 4:30 PM- Signature Theatre Open House

 

The library will sponsor several events in conjunction with the Signature Theatre Open House. From noon until 4:30 we will have kids’ crafts, including paper bag puppets.

 

Two Stage Combat Workshops featuring Fight Choreographer Brad Waller will take place at the library. Please consult forthcoming Signature Theater Open House Brochures for exact times.

                                   

There will also be two screening of Documentary Film about Signature Theatre at 12:15 PM and 4:15PM. A Signature Sensation    A documentary about the growth, success, and spirit of Signature Theatre.  The film takes us on a lively journey of the theatre’s development –   from a seed idea in the minds of its two co-founders, Eric Schaeffer and Donna Migliaccio, to an award-winning, nationally recognized theatre that still maintains its humble charm.   Interviews with Eric Schaeffer, Artistic Director and  Donna Migliaccio, Actress, and other key players,  with footage and photos of the theatre’s previous home in the Shirlington garage, its outreach programs, and its new location anchoring Shirlington Village.  Produced by filmmakers Ben Crutchfield and Alexis Van Dyke.   28 minutes. Q&A with the filmmakers after each screening.

                                   

Sunday August 3, 2 PM  Family Movie Matinee  - Fantasia (1940). Rated G. Walt Disney Pictures. Rated G; 120 minutes.

An audience favorite for more than 50 years, Fantasia is a classic piece of moviemaking combining classical music and animation into an event unmatched in motion picture history.

 

Tuesday, August 5, 7 PM  Making Music Film Series:  Once (2006) Rated R. Directed by John Carney. Featuring Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. A modern-day musical about a street musician and an immigrant and their eventful week in Dublin, as they write, rehearse and record songs that tell their love story.

 

Wednesday, August 6, 2 PM  Intro to Word Computer Class. Learn how to do basic word processing using Microsoft Word.

 

 

Thursday, August 7, 1 PM Making Music Film Series:  Almost Famous (2000). Rated R, directed by Cameron Crowe.

 

An aspiring fifteen-year-old journalist, hits the road with the Stillwater band to document the band’s rise in popularity in an article for Rolling Stone magazine. He falls in love with the music and the lifestyle, and learns a few things about himself along the way in this fictional rendition of director Cameron Crowe’s experience as a teen journalist in the ’70s.

 

Friday August 8, 1 PM   Tween & Teen Screens: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006). Rated PG-13. Directed by Gore Verbinski Featuring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly.

 

Captain Jack is back and finds himself with a blood debt to the legendary Davey Jones. If can’t find a way to fulfill his obligation then he will be doomed to eternal damnation and servitude in the afterlife. Meanwhile, Will and Elizabeth are planning a wedding but are forced to put that on hold to help Jack out of yet another predicament.

Monday Aug. 11, 7 PM  Monday Night Musicals:  An American In Paris (1951). Not Rated. Directed by Vincente Minnelli. Featuring: Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron, and Oscar Levant.

Dazzling color and brilliant choreography frame a lovely score by George and Ira Gershwin in this highly original musical. An American in Paris won the 1951 Academy Award for Best Picture and includes an unusual 20 minute ballet sequence choreographed by its star, Gene Kelly.

Tuesday, August 12, 7 PM Author Talk   Maggie Jackson, author of Distracted: The Erosion of Attention and the Coming Dark Age, speaks about the origins of short attention spans and the tools being developing to stretch them.

 

Friday August 15, 1 PM  Tween & Teen Screens: Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007). Rated PG-13. Directed by Gore Verbinski Featuring: Johnny Depp, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightly.

When Captain Jack is taken  to the end of the world, Will, Elizabeth and Captain Barbossa band together to bring him back in this fun filled adventure. The crew must then employ the help of the nine pirate lords in a final stand against Beckett, Davy Jones and the East India Trade.

 

 

Tuesday August 19, 2 PM Intro to the Internet Computer Class. Learn how to surf the World Wide Web.   Topics include the components of a browser; how to find information using search engines; surfing web pages.

 

 

Tuesday, August 19, 7 PM Making Music Film Series:   High Fidelity (2000). Rated R. Directed by Stephen Frears. Featuring: John Cusack, Jack Black, Tim Robbins and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Rob, a record store owner and compulsive list maker, recounts his top five breakups, including the one in progress. ” A comedy about fear of commitment, hating your job, falling in love and other pop favorites.”

 

Thursday August 21, 1 PM  Making Music Film Series:  Music and Lyrics (2007) Rated PG-13. Directed by Marc Lawrence. Featuring: Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore. A former ’80s Pop Star is offered a chance to rebuild his career by writing a hit song for a new teen sensation. The only problem is he needs a lyricist to provide the words for his music.

 

Friday, August 22, 1 PM Tween & Teen Screens  Spider Man (2002) Rated PG-13. Directed by Sam Raimi. Featuring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco and Willem Dafoe.  Peter Parker is just an average high school student until he is bitten by a genetically altered spider. He soon beings to discover that he has super-human strength, agility and an ESP-like spider sense. Peter decides to use his power for good and begins to fight crime.

Monday, August 25, 7 PM  Monday Night Musicals  Silk Stockings (1957) not rated. Directed by Rouben Mamoulian. Featuring: Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, and Janis Paige.

In this musical version of  the classic film Ninotchka, Cyd Charisse is the beautiful Russian envoy who succumbs to the romantic lures of Paris, and falls in love with a charming man-about-town. The marvelously matched team of Astaire and Charisse sing and dance to a classic Cole Porter score featuring “All Of You,” and “It’s A Chemical Reaction, That’s All.”

 

Tuesday August 26, 7 PM  Making Music Film Series: The Commitments (1991) Rated  PG-13. Directed by Alan Parker. Featuring: Robert Arkins and Colm Meaney. The movie recounts the  travails of Jimmy Rabbitte to form the “World’s Hardest Working Band,” The Commitments, and bring soul music to the people of Dublin, Ireland.

Thursday, August 28, 1 PM – Making Music Film Series: August Rush (2007) Rated PG. Directed by Kristen Sheridan. Featuring: Freddie Highmore, Keri Russell, John Rhys Meyers and Robin Williams. Two young musicians have a chance encounter but when they are torn apart they leave an infant in their wake. Young August Rush, orphaned by circumstance, uses his unique inherited musical talent to seek the parents from whom he was separated at birth.

 

Friday, August 29, 1 PM Tween & Teen Screens:  Spider Man 2 (2004). Directed by Sam Raimi. Featuring: Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, and Alfred Molina. Your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man is still struggling with his personal life and his newfound powers.  He is further drawn to M.J. but knows their relationship puts her in danger. However, his biggest challenge arrives in the form of a mad scientist named Dr. Octopus who is terrorizing the city with his deadly bionic tentacles.
